I gave a lecture on “Spirituality and Development” to a class of Cambridge University student in Development Studies. The first part of the lecture discusses the question of “What is Spirituality?”. Your answer to the exact same question rings many common chords. My lecture explains that the widespread adoption of logical positivism in the academia ruled this question out of bounds of the sensible questions. It is only after the collapse of positivism that this question can be asked. I have attempted to provide an answer based on the idea that compassion, our heart’s ability to sense the emotions of others, is at the root of it.
